SMARTLIS will provide process management, from request to results, in Molecular, Cytogenetics, and Sequencing, while FUJITSU OMICS ANALYSIS SOLUTION will process the primary, secondary, and tertiary analysis of the sequencing information.

The highly advanced system will enable comprehensive management of:

✅ Bioinformatic analysis and variant classifications
✅ Patient-family relationships and inheritance
✅ Structured clinical and phenotypic information (genetic and disease ontologies)
✅ Full traceability across the entire genetic diagnostic process

In collaboration with the Dr. Negrin University Hospital (Las Palmas) and UDIAT (Sabadell), Smartlis' capabilities for managing Genetics processes are being expanded.

The project aims to improve all Smartlis utilities for Genetics laboratories and will be developed over the following months.

In the current phase, utilities have been developed for the management, registration and traceability of all processes for each protocol.

From the reception of the various samples involved, the extraction of DNA (kits used, purity obtained, etc.) to its storage (racks, positions, modules), the creation of runs with tracking of racks, samples and reagents used as well as the results obtained.

The resulting information is automatically transferred to the results templates (texts, images, etc.) specific to the protocols used.

During the following phases, new utilities will be addressed, from improvements in family management to the integration of external advanced computing systems.

Billing in commercial laboratories is often complex due to the large variety of clients, multiple rates, specific rules and existing commercial agreements.

In this case, in addition, our client uses MS Dynamics for the general accounting of the business, so it needs to integrate the billing of laboratory services and other services provided (diagnostic imaging, pathological anatomy, genetic counseling, etc.) as well as costs and other items.


The challenge has been to integrate all the complexity of the business's billing in the SL Billing module and automatically integrate the invoices in the client's MS Dynamics.


Our client is a Spanish laboratory chain with 15 laboratories spread across the country and managed with a single instance of Smartlis, achieving a single management of the 7,500 daily requests and an issuance of 14,000 invoices per year.
The company has 10 different billing entities and various commercial agreements with multiple clients and individuals, which means complex billing rules.
The company's global accounting is managed through MS Dynamics where invoices and costs from various business units of the company are integrated
The integration from SL was carried out by extracting data that was manually manipulated to apply billing rules and importing into MS Dynamics.
This process was complex, slow and with the possibility of errors.


Lab Technologies, together with specialized personnel from the client and an MS Dynamics partner, have designed the technical solution:
• Integration developed in Smartlis using MS Dynamics REST services and/or REST API´s built by the partner
• Integration in Smartlis the interaction with these APIs in the billing workflow
• Integration in Smartlis the accounting rules


• Full automated and operative integration between Smartlis Billing module and MS Dynamics
• Since 1st June 2024 all invoices are processed by this active integration

The LIS is a strategic tool in laboratory management. However, in the European Union there are different trends depending on the country, the healthcare model and the type of laboratory.

Some European countries assume this idea and dedicate their own resources, with various professional profiles, to the management of the LIS, ensuring its performance, optimizing the organization of the laboratory itself, monitoring the processes and applying a policy of continuous improvement thanks to the information obtained through the LIS.

Another important part is the epidemiological exploitation of results or certain pathologies, their interrelation with clinical information and their use to improve patient care processes.

In other countries, many of these tasks are delegated to the LIS provider, assuming that the professional profiles in the laboratory are of a medical nature and should not or cannot be dedicated to tasks that are considered IT.

El LIS es una  herramienta estratégica en la gestión de laboratorios. Existe una dependencia total en los principales procesos relacionados con la entrada de información, resultados, muestras y distribución, facturación, integración de analizadores, estadísticas, gestión de la calidad, etc…Por otra parte, el laboratorio es una entidad dinámica, con continuos cambios y avances que deben reflejarse en el LIS.

Por tanto, parece razonable que si el LIS es tan importante en el laboratorio, deberíamos tener  control interno sobre su conocimiento, funcionamiento y posibilidades.

Sin embargo, en la Unión Europea hay tendencias diferentes dependiendo del país, del modelo de sanidad y del tipo de laboratorio.

Algunos países europeos asumen esta idea y dedican recursos propios, con diversos perfiles profesionales, a la gestión del LIS, asegurando su rendimiento, optimizando la propia organización del laboratorio, monitorizando los procesos y aplicando una política de mejora continua gracias a la información obtenida mediante el LIS.

Otra parte importante es la explotación epidemiológica de resultados o de ciertas patologías, su interrelación con la información clínica  y su uso para la mejora de los procesos asistenciales a pacientes.

En otros países, se delega al proveedor del LIS, muchas de estas tareas, asumiendo que los perfiles profesionales en el laboratorio son de tipo médico y no deben o pueden dedicarse a tareas que se consideran de IT.

Ya sea un modelo u otro (o incluso uno mixto), existen roles que deberían tenerse en cuenta para la correcta gestión del LIS. Estos roles pueden ser compartidos por diferentes profesionales:

Los LIS incorporan herramientas estándar para la explotación de la información, pero puede ser necesario adaptarlas al tipo de explotación que deseamos realizar. Si además, queremos cruzar información de diferentes fuentes, necesitaremos un perfil de un profesional más cercano a IT. El reto es que el profesional de IT tenga experiencia en el entorno de laboratorio para que el diálogo con el resto de profesionales sea fluido


 El LIS es una herramienta estratégica en el laboratorio y necesita recursos especializados para su correcta gestión. Es aconsejable que una parte importante del conocimiento se mantenga dentro de la organización del laboratorio. Los distintos roles pueden ser asumidos por distintos perfiles profesionales.
